Nelsons Column, Great Yarmouth

Conservation of sandstone monument

Nelsons column in Great Yarmouth was designed by William Wilkins and is known locally as the Norfolk  pillar. Nimbus were appointed to carry out conservation work for completion by the bicentenial of Nelsons death in 2005.

Work encompassed a complete survey of the monument with the main body of the work being repointing of decayed mortar and open joints. There was also a small element of cleaning and rendering. Along with work on the column, pedestal and plinth, the surrounding boundary wall and railings were replaced.

This year work to the column and regeneration to the surrounding area has won a Green Apple award for Architectural Heritage, an organisation set up to promote environmental best practice arond the world.
