Bunn Column - Frome
Rebuilding and recarving of decorative stone
column
July 2004 saw the unveiling of a fascinating stone
column which marks the site of a proposed 19th century crescent in
Christchurch Street West to be built to rival those in nearby Bath.
This had been the dream of a well known figure in Frome, Thomas Bunn,
who lived in Monmouth House & was very involved throughout his
active life in local matters. Sadly his crescent, marked by a fine
column (designed and carved in 1846 by Edward Davies of Bath) at either
end of the proposed site, never came to fruition and one of the pillars
eventually disappeared.
Fragments of the column were discovered in various
locations in and around Frome. The pieces were brought to the workshop
of Nimbus where they were assembled and the missing sections identified.
Using the evidence of the surviving column, new Bath stone was cut
and carved. The original site of the column was then prepared and the
column itself erected. Finally, mortar repairs were applied and the
column with its intricate corbels and scrolls now once again can be
seen on Christchurch Street West.
