St. George’s Chapel - Windsor
Conservation of carved grotesques
Nimbus are working as specialist sculpture conservators
on the first phase of a project to conserve the external elevations
of this magnificent medieval church set in the grounds of Windsor Castle.
Beneath the parapets are a large number of carved grotesques, many
of which are in a poor state of repair.
Using archive photographs as a guide, these grotesques are being
cleaned using selective poulticing and air abrasive techniques.
The stone is
then consolidated and micro pinned where necessary before protective
mortar repairs are applied. Given the very delicate detail of the
carving, there is a degree of modelling in these repairs which
requires great
sensitivity and skill. Finally, the carvings are protected with a
shelter coat. All works are being carefully recorded.
Client: Dean
and Canons of St. George’s, Windsor
