The Guildhall, Small Street, Bristol
Conservation and Cleaning of a Victorian facade
This Victorian Gothic building was heavily soiled by atmospheric pollution and a degree of organic material had built up over the years. Using a variety of cleaning techniques including nebulous water sprays, a Doff steam cleaning system, and ammonium carbonate poultices a level of cleanliness was achieved that retained the patina on the surface of the limestone. Old cement repairs, failed pointing and worn stone were repaired using lime mortars built up on ceramic armatures. Only limited new stone was needed to be replaced. Some consolidation using limewatering and sheltercoat was used on the carved details of the facade including the parapet, statuary and shield of arms.
