Shell House - Dorset
Conservation of intricate decorative folly
Hidden away in a private garden in Dorset, this structure
had fallen into disrepair, primarily as a result of structural movement,
and deterioration of the thatched roof.
The primary task therefore was to make the structure
safe. The thatched roof and defective timbers were replaced by the Client
prior to Nimbus starting work on the contract. At this time there was
a collapse of a ceiling panel. This was due to the total failure of the
lathes brought about by ingress of water.
The works involved the repointing of the exterior
walls; the pinning and rebuilding of the structural cracking, the lifting
and relaying of the stone floors, the replacement of the entrance doors;
the refurbishment and replacement of lead guttering and flashing.
Internal plaster was conserved and where necessary
replaced, as was the decorative plaster mouldings.
The Client had retained many of the fallen shells
and these have been refixed and new shells sourced from Dorset beaches.
This phase of works has been to conserve the structure.
At present, discussions are taking place as to whether or not to go onto
the next phase, which would be to reintroduce the missing shells and
decoration.
