St. Paul’s Cathedral - Dome and Tambour (Phase 3B)

Cleaning of dome painting and reinstatement of painted scheme in tambour

As part of the ongoing four year project of cleaning and conservation at St. Paul’s Cathedral, the work is now being carried out on the Dome and Tambour. This has required the design and construction of a remarkable scaffold that allows for work to be carried out on one quadrant at a time. Once complete, the scaffold (which is suspended from cables hung from the lantern) is rotated to the next quadrant.

Nimbus are main contractors for the project and are working closely with wall painting conservators (Paine and Stewart) on the Thornhil painting in the Dome and with specialist decorators (Hesp and Jones) on the reconstruction of the original painted scheme in the tambour. Each quadrant takes nearly four months to complete and the scaffold will finally be lowered in May 2005.

Client: Dean and Chapter of St. Paul’s
Surveyor of the Fabric: Martin Stancliffe
