Recarving and conservation of marble fireplaces
Following the fire in 1994, many of the state rooms
were devastated and Nimbus was awarded the contract for the repair
and conservation of the fireplaces. Particularly badly affected was
the carrara marble surround for the State Dining Room.
This was dismantled and found to be beyond repair,
the heat and water having combined to shatter the marble into many
pieces. The decision was taken to completely replicate the fire surround.
This involved setting out the complex mouldings in full scale drawings
and then establishing a source of white statuary marble. The pieces
were then carved and hand polished in our workshop before being taken
back up to Windsor and installed.
Some sections of the twenty other fire surrounds
affected had to be replaced, but most of the remainder of the work
involved cleaning, repair, refixing and waxing.
